If you’ve made it a resolution to get healthy in 2013, a good first step would be to make a visit to see your doctor and get a clear picture of your total health. Your doctor can help you understand where you stand, where you can make improvements, and what steps you can take to achieve your health goals.
Jack Der-Sarkissian, MD, a family medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, outlines five important topics of discussion to bring to your doctor in order to get a good snapshot of your total health: diet, exercise, sleep, smoking/drinking, and social interaction.
“If you can tackle those issues… [that] will be a good road to healthy living.”
Dr. Der-Sarkissian also recommends bringing a trusted friend or family member to any doctor visit. “Going and seeing a doctor can be a highly emotional experience, especially when you’re not feeling well,” he says. Having someone by your side may help you better process information from the doctor.
