First time mom Jenny Thamer had no idea motherhood would be so difficult. “Your life changes in so many ways,” Jenny reflects. “You learn that you have this incredible capacity for love. And you want to do the right thing for your baby, but you don’t always have the right tools.”
In Jenny’s case, little baby Lauren just wouldn’t sleep. “Sleep deprivation is a special form of torture,” she chuckles. “And you just don’t know what to do as a new parent.”
Jenny’s doctor connected her on My Health Manager to Sharla Fellers, a child development specialist. From there, Jenny was able to schedule phone appointments anytime she needed to discuss issues she was experiencing with Lauren.
For Jenny, being able to talk to Sharla by phone – at times that were convenient for her – has made all the difference. “It’s much easier than having to juggle schedules with the rest of the family to go into the doctor’s office,” she said.
Sharla worked closely with Jenny to tailor a plan that would work for her family’s specific needs. “What worked for her neighbor might not work for her,” said Sharla. “And so we try to come up with a plan that really fits for her family and her lifestyle.”
With Sharla’s guidance, Jenny has gotten Lauren’s sleeping routine under control, but they continued to work together over the years on other developmental and behavioral challenges like biting and hitting.
Lauren is now two years old and is a happy, healthy, and a doting big sister to 11-month old Thomas.
“I credit her with helping us raise this really well adjusted kid,” said Jenny. “It’s really made such a huge impact on our life. I call her my second my mom ‘cause she’s just so wonderful. I just love her.”
