After a lifetime of struggling with her weight, Kaiser Permanente employee and member Ravida Benjamin, RN, made the decision to get healthy.
Ravida was diabetic and insulin dependent for most of her life. “I didn’t want to take shots anymore,” said Ravida. “I thought, ‘For my family, I’d like to get healthy.’”
As a nurse, Ravida witnessed first-hand the complications that coincide with diabetes, such as amputation and End-Stage Renal Disease. By embracing Kaiser Permanente’s healthy lifestyle programs like KP Walk, Thrive Across America, and KP Mix-it Up, Ravida transformed her body inside and out. “I never thought I’d be a calorie counter,” she laughed.
Aside from revamping her diet to include more fruits and vegetables, Ravida began an exercise regimen. Since embarking on her journey towards better health, Ravida has lost more than 60 pounds, and is no longer insulin dependent.
“Go for a short walk and build,” encouraged Ravida. “I’ve gone from walking 30 minutes a day to 120 minutes uphill when I have a day off.”
Ravida understands that getting healthy is a challenge. “Start small, don’t get discouraged. You might slip, but that’s ok!”
